A Day in the Life: Dr. David Boyd

Supporting the Warfighter, One Patient at a Time

At ERP International, supporting the U.S. Air Force mission often means supporting the people behind it. For David Boyd, MD, that work happens every day at Eglin Air Force Base, where he has served as a Physician Dermatologist for the past seven years.

His connection to the mission is also personal. As a former aviator, Dr. Boyd brings added perspective to his work with Air Force personnel, particularly flyers whose duties place unique demands on their health and readiness. That shared experience helps strengthen the trust he builds with patients and reinforces the purpose behind his work.

While dermatology may not always be the first specialty people associate with military readiness, Dr. Boyd’s work plays an important role in keeping service members healthy, deployable, and ready to perform their duties around the world. The majority of his patients are active-duty military personnel seeking care for skin conditions and diseases that can affect not only their health but also their ability to perform specific responsibilities. In many cases, those patients need clinical evaluation and clearance related to military duties, making timely, expert care essential to the larger mission.

Dr. Boyd’s days are centered around a full patient schedule that includes both new and established cases. His work ranges from diagnosing and treating common and complex skin conditions to performing biopsies and excisions, as well as laser and light treatments. It is highly specialized care delivered in a mission-driven environment, where precision, responsiveness, and sound clinical judgment matter.

His role extends beyond direct patient care. Dr. Boyd also helps train active-duty Family Medicine Residents and physician assistant students who will go on to serve in frontline and forward-deployed environments. That teaching responsibility is one of the most meaningful parts of his work. By helping the next generation of military medical professionals recognize and treat skin conditions, he is contributing not only to today’s patients but to the future strength of military medicine.

Like many healthcare professionals serving in federal environments, Dr. Boyd balances clinical demands with administrative and technical challenges. He notes that one of the biggest hurdles is documenting patient care in a system that lags behind current industry standards. Staying current with the constant flow of new information in dermatology is another ongoing challenge, but one he embraces in order to provide the best possible care to his patients.

For Dr. Boyd, the rewards of the job are clear. Training future physicians is deeply fulfilling, as is the opportunity to identify and diagnose skin cancer and other serious conditions for which early intervention can make a life-saving difference. His impact was formally recognized when he was named Faculty of the Year for the 2021–2022 Family Medicine Residency program, an achievement that reflects both his clinical excellence and commitment to mentorship.

For seven years, ERP has enabled Dr. Boyd to provide high-quality dermatologic care to service members at Eglin AFB. His story is a reminder that military healthcare is not only about treatment, but also about readiness, prevention, mentorship, and mission support. Through his expertise and dedication, Dr. Boyd is helping ensure that those who serve our country receive the care they need to continue serving at their best.
